The engine is reinvestment

Bavaria’s 2026 discussion emphasizes generating cash from loans, high-yield bonds and other income assets, then reinvesting it. A lower market price can purchase more future income if the underlying cash flow survives. That condition matters: lower prices caused by permanent credit losses are not automatically bargains. Spending all distributions also leaves less income available for compounding.

Start with the source of the payout

Bavaria distinguishes net investment income from capital gains. Credit portfolios generally collect contractual interest, while equity funds can depend more on realized gains to finance distributions. Research coverage against the appropriate earnings source. For a BDC, review non-accruals, payment-in-kind interest, leverage and per-share NAV; a declared dividend alone proves little about sustainability.

Distribution policy can obscure the economics

A managed payout can smooth cash receipts without being fully earned in the same period. Bavaria warns that funding distributions from future hoped-for gains can deplete the capital available for recovery. Tax return of capital is not by itself proof of economic destruction, either. Compare NAV total return, distributions and audited financial statements over several periods.

Credit instruments are not interchangeable

Senior loans, high-yield bonds, preferred securities, BDC shares, CLO debt and CLO equity carry different loss priorities. We added diversified bond and loan funds, multiple private-credit managers and senior CLO-debt comparisons. JAAA’s AAA-tranche mandate should not be confused with JBBB’s lower-rated debt or the existing CLO-equity funds. Falling short-term rates can reduce floating-rate income.

Diversify the managers and the underlying borrowers

FOF was Bavaria’s publicly discussed 2026 idea: a managed portfolio of CEFs spanning several asset classes. Our broader universe includes fund-of-funds and convertible comparisons, but overlapping underlying holdings can make apparent diversification misleading. CEF discounts and leverage add another layer of opportunity and risk beyond the assets themselves.

What the site ranking actually measures

The default rank balances one-year and longer distribution contribution, calculated as adjusted-price total return minus price return over identical dates. That includes reinvestment and every distribution type. It is an Income Lens historical proxy, not a coverage ratio, dividend-growth measure, future yield forecast or official Income Factory rating. Current NII, UNII, credit quality and NAV discounts are not in this score.
